Why Gypsy Splash?
I chose the name ‘Gypsy’ because, for me, it represents the freedom, adventure, and constant evolution of life. Growing up in Australia with proud second-gen Irish grandparents, I was often called a ‘gypsy’—not in a negative way, but as a term of endearment. People would say I had a ‘gypsy spirit,’ always moving, always seeking the next adventure. It became a way for them to help me embrace my nomadic experience and find comfort and strength during an unstable childhood. My early life was marked by isolation and a lack of support, which is part of what shaped my journey. The word “gypsy” became a symbol of survival and resilience, a reflection of the freedom I sought in the midst of it all. By the time I turned 20, I’d already lived in multiple places, moving every six months and attending countless schools. It became part of who I am—someone who’s always on the go, embracing change.
The name ‘Gypsy Splash’ emerged after a period of deep self-reflection and healing, a process where I reconnected with my inner child. Water has always been a source of healing and comfort for me, and the word ‘Splash’ feels like a celebration of that. As a child, I found peace in the water, and it was through this love of water and the fluidity of movement that the name ‘Gypsy Splash’ was born—reflecting my journey of constant evolution, growth, and the current call of the open road.
The use of the word ‘Gypsy’ also speaks to my merging of cultures—my Australian upbringing, the Irish heritage passed down by my grandparents, and the personal experiences that shape who I am today. I’ve had two people reach out, sharing that the term has a painful history for the Romani community, I was not aware and I approach it with respect, reading up on it. For me, the term symbolises freedom, and the joy of constant evolution. I want to honour that spirit while being respectful and inclusive of all who share the love for life on the move. I’m open to feedback and keen to better understand the use of the word.
